The Dark Forest Fights Back

The paths beyond ShireStone Keep have always held their share of mysteries. Ancient woodland, forgotten places and winding trails await those willing to venture beyond the safety of the Keep.

But exploring the Dark Forest is about to become a little more dangerous.

We've been working on one of SoulQuest's most important early gameplay features: combat encounters.

And our first creature is already waiting among the trees.

Meet the Forest Prowler

The Forest Prowler is a fierce woodland wolf and the first enemy adventurers will face while exploring the Dark Forest.

Not every journey will lead to trouble, but wander far enough and you may find yourself confronting one of these creatures.

Your early adventures offer an introduction to the Prowler, but encounters aren't limited to a single fight. Further journeys through the forest can bring fresh confrontations, each offering another opportunity to test your abilities.

We want exploration to feel like an adventure, where choosing to push further into the wilderness carries both opportunity and risk.

Your Move, Adventurer

When an encounter begins, you'll enter a dedicated battle scene featuring your character facing their opponent.

Your adventurer appears with their chosen appearance and equipped gear, standing against the Forest Prowler in a woodland setting.

We've also been working on bringing these encounters to life through character movement, attack animations and visual feedback.

But appearances are only part of the experience.

Combat is turn-based, putting each decision in your hands.

You can attack your opponent, defend yourself against incoming damage, use a healing item or attempt to flee.

Each action has its consequences.

Attacking brings you closer to victory, but leaves you open to retaliation if your opponent survives. Defending reduces the damage you take, while drinking a healing potion might save your life at the cost of giving your opponent another opportunity to strike.

And sometimes, discretion really is the better part of valour.

Fleeing allows you to escape safely, although you'll have to leave any potential rewards behind.

Throughout the encounter, you'll be able to follow your health, your opponent's condition and a record of each turn.

We want combat to be approachable without making every encounter feel like a foregone conclusion.

Risk, Reward and Recovery

Defeating a Forest Prowler earns you gold and experience, helping your character progress through their adventures.

Rewards can vary between encounters, giving players another reason to venture back into the wilderness.

However, victory isn't guaranteed.

Your health, equipment and available supplies all play a part in determining how well you fare.

Preparing at ShireStone Keep before setting out is always a sensible choice. And should an encounter get the better of you, you'll be able to recover at the Keep before trying again.

These early encounters are deliberately straightforward, giving us a foundation to build upon as SoulQuest continues to develop.

Just the Beginning

The Forest Prowler represents our first step towards bringing combat back into the world of SoulQuest.

There's still plenty to develop, refine and balance.

For now, our focus is on ensuring encounters feel satisfying, that player decisions matter, and that battles fit naturally into the wider experience of exploring the realm.

As we continue working towards closed alpha, we'll be sharing more of the systems, locations and adventures taking shape across SoulQuest.

The Dark Forest is growing.

And its inhabitants aren't all friendly.
